Directions: Fenway Park is located within walking distance of Brookline, and many Red Sox fans choose to walk from either the Brookline St. Mary’s T stop on the C Branch or the Fenway T stop on the D Branch (both on the MBTA Green Line), in order to avoid the mayhem of the Kenmore area. Once at either stop, you are within sight of Boston’s treasured baseball stadium and need only follow the crowd or ask a passer-by with a Red Sox hat to make it over to Yawkey Way, the home of Fenway Park.
What’s There: Fenway Park was built in 1912 as the home of the Boston Red Sox baseball team and is now the oldest Major League Baseball Stadium in use. The Red Sox are the only team in the MLB to use their original stadium, and players and fans alike treasure the quirks of the stadium that arose out of additions and renovations made in tight space constraints. The most famous of these additions is known to Sox fans as “The Green Monster”, but is more accurately described as the green thirty-seven-foot-tall left field wall that serves as both a nemesis and inspiration for many right-handed batters. The spirit and pride of Bostonians are palpable at every game the Red Sox play at Fenway Park, as fans gather together to sing “Sweet Caroline” during the 7th inning stretch, enjoy hot dogs, and cheer on their beloved Sox. In 2008, Fenway Park broke a MLB record by selling out the most consecutive home games in history, 456 games. Now that’s dedication. To truly experience the city of Boston at its very best, becoming a part of the “Red Sox Nation”, even if just for a night, is something you’ve got to do.
We could fill pages and pages with terrific books about Fenway Park, so we thought we’d pick just one – a real favorite! Fenway Park: The Centennial: 100 Years of Red Sox Baseball honors the 100 year anniversary of this historic landmark. Included in the book are some current beautiful pictures of Fenway and some rarely seen pictures from the Sports Museum of New England. If you’ve been to Fenway you’ll love this book and if you haven’t been to Fenway … Go!
